LUNATIQUE

Lunatique
Written & Directed by Gabriel Kalim Mucci
2016, Brazil

After an unspecified apocalyptic event, a survivor arms herself and leaves the relative safety of her shelter for a dangerous journey into the ash-covered remains of a destroyed city.

Creator Mucci, who frequently collaborates with horror short veteran Carlos G. Gananian (Akai), is planning a feature-length version of this bleak and very ambitious short film.

AKAI

Akai
Written & Directed by Carlos G. Gananian
2006, Brazil

Brazilian auteur Gananian creates a memorable and atmospheric take on a familiar horror genre antagonist in this dark short film.

If Matthew Garrett-maker of the disturbing Beating Hearts-made a vampire short film, it would likely feel similar to this particular work.

Akai shows Carlos G. Gananian’s tremendous growth in the wake of his previous horror short films Behemoth (2003) and Coagula (2005).

He went on to make the shorts Am/Fm (2014) and Sol (2017).

M IS FOR MAILBOX

M is for Mailbox
Directed by Dante Vescio & Rodrigo Gasparini
Screenplay by Dante Vescio, Rafael Baliu & Rodrigo Gasparini
2013, Brazil

In this entry in the ABCs of Death 2 short film competition, Vescio and Gasparini create the type of horror short that could be perceived as the first scene of a feature film in the vein of Pedro Cristiani’s Deus Irae.

Both short films lay the groundwork for great horror features that would be exciting to see.

Vescio and Gasparini directed the horror feature The Fostering (aka O Diabo Mora Aqui) in 2015.

NINJAS

Ninjas
Directed by Dennison Ramalho
Written by Dennison Ramalho & Marco de Castro & Marcelo Velloso
2010, Brazil

Brazilian director of the critically acclaimed short film Love From Mother Only (2003) and co-screenwriter of the Coffin Joe film Embodiment of Evil (2008), Ramalho delivers a brutal and disturbing tale of guilt and corruption.  Not for the squeamish, Ninjas is easily Ramalho’s most accomplished work to date.

Ramalho contributed a segment to The ABCs of Death 2 called “J is for Jesus”-a savage indictment of persecution in the name of religion.

The Hell Withina Ramalho-helmed horror feature originally announced in late 2010-is currently in pre-production.
